LOCAL SUPPORT IS GROWING FOR THE GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP SEWER SALE REFERENDUM AS COUNCILWOMAN CAROLYN GRACE ENDORSES A YES VOTE
Gloucester Township, N.J. – Councilwoman Carolyn Grace has voiced her strong support for the Gloucester Township sewer sale referendum, emphasizing the significant benefits this initiative would bring to the community. Grace, who has been a dedicated member of the Gloucester Township Council, stated:
“I’m supporting the sewer sale because simply put, it is a tremendous opportunity for Gloucester Township residents. I have heard frustrations on property taxes from residents time and time again; by supporting the sewer sale, we can do something about it. We will be able to lower local property taxes and freeze them for five years, make sure the sewer system keeps operating like it should, keep the senior discount on sewer bills, and ensure not one single township employee loses their job. A YES vote on the sewer sale is a win all around.”
The referendum, which will appear on the November ballot, proposes transferring ownership of the Township’s sewer system to New Jersey American Water. This transaction will result in a $233 million investment in Gloucester Township, including a $143 million payment for the system and a $90 million investment in infrastructure improvements over the next decade. The Gloucester Township Council has committed to using these funds to reduce and freeze local property taxes, guarantee continued employment for sewer employees, provide free sewer lateral cleanouts for residents, and support a range of community programs including recreational enhancements, expanded senior and cultural activities, and additional resources for police and first responders.
If voters reject the sale, the Township will face the necessity of borrowing more money, increasing rates significantly, or both, to maintain the sewer system independently. This scenario could lead to higher property taxes, increasing the cost of living for all Gloucester Township residents, both homeowners and renters alike.
