ASSEMBLYMAN DAN HUTCHISON ENDORSES THE GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP SEWER SALE
Gloucester Township, N.J. – Assemblyman Dan Hutchison has endorsed the Gloucester Township sewer sale. Assemblyman Hutchison, who served as a Gloucester Township Councilman from 2005 - 2023, commented:
“Voting yes on the sewer sale makes total sense to me. As a longtime resident and former councilman, I can't think of a better way to reduce and freeze local property taxes while addressing the infrastructure needs without a big rate increase. The sewer sale is an opportunity for our community, and I hope you will join me in supporting the referendum with a YES vote.”
The referendum, which will be on November’s ballot, proposes transferring ownership of the Township’s sewer system to New Jersey American Water. This transaction will result in a $233 million investment in Gloucester Township, including a $143 million payment for the sewer system and a $90 million investment in infrastructure improvements over the next decade. The Gloucester Township Council has committed to using these funds to reduce and freeze local property taxes, guarantee continued employment for sewer employees, provide free sewer lateral cleanouts for residents, and support a range of community programs including recreational enhancements, expanded senior and cultural activities, and additional resources for police and first responders.
If voters reject the sale, the Township will be forced to borrow more money, increase rates significantly, or both, to maintain the sewer system on its own. The latter could lead to higher property taxes, raising the cost of living for all Gloucester Township residents, both homeowners and renters alike.
